Ice bath
Ice baths boost your immunity while activating your sympathetic nervous system, improving your circulation, and speeding up your metabolism, helping you lose fat & feel amazing.
Evidence
Throughout history, the practice of taking ice baths has deep ancestral roots. There is archaeological evidence of how ancient Nordic peoples and ancient Finns incorporated ice baths as an integral part of their daily lives, using them both to maintain health and to strengthen themselves and perform purification rituals.
These ancient traditions have been rediscovered today thanks in large part to the impetus given by notable figures such as the Dutchman, Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman,” who years ago, after experimenting with his own body, developed a methodology that combined ice water immersion and controlled breathing techniques to improve health, boost immunity, and enhance physical performance.
The scientific evidence obtained by Wim Hof, thanks to his persistence and a multitude of scientific studies carried out in the most prestigious research centers, has made this practice highly recommended and helped to popularize it.
What's a session of Ice bath like?
The goal is to stay in the ice bath for three minutes, although some health benefits are obtained after just 30 seconds. The thermal shock causes the body to react quickly, triggering your fight-or-flight response. For the user, the key practice is breathing. Taking a deep breath upon entering signals to your nervous system that you are not actually in danger. As a result of this process, you “tone” your vagus nerve, which governs your nervous system, making you more resistant to stress. That part of the experience also causes a rush of dopamine in the body, so you come out feeling noticeably happier than when you went in.
Beyond the benefits related to hacking the body's resistance stress, ice baths also carry the same benefits as cryotherapy, turning white adipose tissue (the ugly fat that surrounds the lower abdomen, cellulite) into brown adipose tissue, which the body can burn for energy.
In addition to eliminating fat, cold thermogensis is effective in counteracting inflammation, which is why it is so popular with professional athletes, as it allows them to push themselves to the extreme and immediately recover to full health.
