Cryotherapy

Evidence

Cryotherapy, which literally means “cold therapy,” is a technique in which the body is exposed to extremely cold temperatures for several minutes.

The theory behind whole-body cryotherapy is that immersing the body in extremely cold air for several minutes forces the body to generate its own heat (cold thermogenesis), a process associated with many health benefits. The client stands in a closed chamber that surrounds their body but has an opening at the top for their head. Inside, air as cold as -319 °F circulates for three minutes.

Main benefits:

  • Improves athletic recovery.
  • Fat loss.
  • Reduces migraine symptoms.
  • Numbs nerve irritation.
  • Helps treat mood disorders.
  • Reduces arthritic pain.
  • May help treat low-risk tumors.
  • Helps prevent dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Treats atopic dermatitis and other skin conditions.

What's a session of Cryotherapy like?

Cryotherapy is a therapy that exposes you to extreme cold, -196 degrees Celsius, for just three minutes. The body is forced to create heat to survive, which is called cold thermogenesis (another form is ice bathing, which we also offer at BioSpa).

Part of cold thermogenesis involves converting white adipose tissue (the unsightly fat that surrounds the lower abdomen, cellulite) into brown adipose tissue, which the body can use as energy.

In addition to eliminating fat, cryotherapy is effective in counteracting inflammation, which is why it is so popular with professional athletes, as it allows them to push themselves to the limit and immediately recover to full health.

Extreme cold also creates a thermal “shock,” which activates survival mechanisms; it increases oxygen in the blood and increases circulation.

The sympathetic nervous system is activated, and with it a cascade of hormones such as adrenaline and noradrenaline, which put your body on alert.

The positive stress generated by cryotherapy also triggers the release of endorphins* and serotonin**, also known as “euphoria hormones” and “feel-good hormones” respectively.

*Endorphins: Endorphins are neurotransmitters that act as the body's natural painkillers and are involved in modulating pain and pleasure (generating a feeling of well-being and euphoria), as well as reducing oxidative stress and the damage it causes to your organs and tissues.

**Serotonin: Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in regulating mood (influencing anxiety, depression, and stress), sleep, appetite, and cognitive function.
