Evidence

Oxygen plays a fundamental role in muscle function during exercise. When we engage in physical activity, our muscles need more energy to function, and this energy is mainly produced through a process called aerobic cellular respiration. During aerobic cellular respiration, oxygen is used to break down nutrients, such as carbohydrates and fats, into a form of energy that muscle cells can use, called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

Oxygen is transported from the lungs to the muscles through the circulatory system, primarily in the hemoglobin of red blood cells. Once in the muscles, oxygen diffuses into the muscle cells and enters the mitochondria, the cellular structures where cellular respiration occurs. There, oxygen helps break down nutrients into ATP, which is then used to fuel muscle contraction and other essential cellular functions.

When muscle activity is intense or prolonged, the demand for oxygen increases and may exceed the body's ability to supply it. In these situations, muscles may temporarily switch to anaerobic respiration, where ATP is produced without oxygen, but this leads to the accumulation of byproducts such as lactic acid, which can cause muscle fatigue. Therefore, an adequate supply of oxygen is crucial for maintaining muscle performance during exercise.

What's a session of Moxy Monitors like?

Moxy Monitor is the way to measure SmO2 in muscle to avoid blind training and optimize performance. The devices allow you to obtain real-time data from your muscles, so you can make instant changes to your training strategy.

Moxy Monitor works by emitting near-infrared light onto the skin and then detecting a portion of that light after it has penetrated the muscle tissue and returned to the surface. Near-infrared light can travel through tissue, especially in the red and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. However, as the light moves through the tissue, it scatters due to interactions with various structures and components within the muscle tissue.

This scattering phenomenon can provide valuable information about oxygenation levels and blood flow within muscle tissue. By analyzing the characteristics of the scattered light detected by the Moxy Monitor, such as its intensity and wavelength, the device can estimate parameters such as muscle oxygen saturation and hemoglobin concentration. These parameters can be useful for monitoring muscle oxygenation and perfusion, assessing muscle fatigue, and optimizing training and performance in athletes and individuals in rehabilitation.

At the beginning of various BioSpa programs, a trainer will use the MoxyMonitor to establish a baseline understanding of the client's muscle capacity at specific intensities, allowing for a personalized protocol based on their unique biology. It's another one of our tools to help you get in the best shape possible in the shortest amount of time.
