Float Tank (THE POD)

Evidence

A sensory deprivation tank, also called an isolation tank or flotation tank, is used for restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST). It is a dark, soundproof tank filled with more than 1,000 pounds of magnesium salt water.

The first tank was designed in 1954 by John C. Lilly, an American physician and neuroscientist. He designed the tank to study the origins of consciousness by cutting off all external stimuli.

Today, finding a sensory deprivation tank is easy, with floatation centers and spas offering floatation therapy around the world.

Its rise in popularity may be due in part to scientific evidence. Studies suggest that spending time floating in a sensory deprivation tank may have some benefits for healthy people, such as muscle relaxation, better sleep, decreased pain, reduced stress and anxiety, and improved creativity.

What's a session of Float Tank (THE POD) like?

Users of this therapy float for approximately one hour in water at body temperature to which magnesium-rich Epsom salts have been added. Without light or sound, the constant sensory overload to which we are exposed is reduced to nothing; the body and mind are freed from the overstimulation to which most of us are currently exposed.

Floatation therapy is designed to eliminate most sensory stimuli, including sound, light, weight/gravity, and touch, allowing the user to experience a sense of zen that normally requires years of advanced meditation.

Essentially, the body is returned to the womb, and by not processing external stimuli, the brain gets to work repairing itself, repairing the body, and even repairing trauma.

Adding Epsom salts to the floatation tank is vital for the therapy to be impactful and beneficial. Epsom salt is a rock-like compound of magnesium and sulfate that generates multiple benefits when it comes into contact with the skin. Once dissolved in water, the body can absorb the magnesium and sulfate, which relieves your stress and anxiety, while relaxing your muscles and alleviating any pain. Pranic healing practioners also believe salt water rids the body of negative energy.

Although many studies have been conducted, the accounts of those who experience the therapy range from sensations that transport them to a weightless environment, to experiencing expanded consciousness, to reaching a state of disconnection never before experienced. However, all accounts have one thing in common: they leave no one indifferent.
